二つの島の物語  A TALE OF TWO ISLANDS

私の最初のウイスキーブログの内容がウイスキー以外の話だということを不思議に感じるだろう。

しかしブログというものは自由なものなのだ。今、私がしていること、つまりカリブ海で片手にラム、そしてもう一方の手にシガーといった恰好の私を書くということで良いのだ。両手ふさがりでは書けないから、これらを置かなければならないが。 

海からのそよ風が午後の熱気を冷ます。私は白い砂の中に足の指をからませている。ジンジャービールの辛さとラムがグラスの中で完璧に混ざり合う。午後、カリブの最も新しくある意味最古の蒸溜所を訪れた後の体を冷ましているのだ。それは島の北部の聖ニコラス修道院にある、1930年に建設されたジャコビアン様式の邸宅である。昔と同じように今でもシュガープランテーションがある。17世紀にラムは生産されていなかったとは考えられない。ということは、ここがラムの生地で最も古い蒸溜所ということになる。 

これまで長い間、ラムの生産は行われていなかった。小さく素敵なスティルが据え付けられ、敷地内で栽培された粉砕したサトウキビの汁を発酵後、蒸溜しそこで熟成される。この小規模で特別なプレミアムな蒸溜所で、島の遺産に命が吹き込まれる。

まさにこの瞬間に、大西洋の遥か向こう側の砂に囲まれた島では、アンソニー・ウィルズがキルホーマン初のシングルモルトをお披露目している。彼の構想は小規模でプレミアムな蒸溜所で、その土地で育った原料を使い、島の遺産に命を与えることである。スコットランドの最初のディスティラーが、その巧みな技を使い蒸溜をしたのはまさにこのアイラ西岸だという人もいる。

偶然か？いやそうではない。世界中でディスティラーたちは同じような方法でスピリッツをつくり出している。つまり、品質、個性、遺産といったものは今、はやりの言葉である。この超自然的なアイラとバルバドスの繋がりはそれほど不思議なものではない。ウイスキーとラムのディスティラーの間では、もっと多くの発想の交流があったのだ。モルト愛飲家の中にはラム愛飲家の人々も増えている。アイラかバルバドスか？考えるまでもなく両方だ！

Now, it might seem strange to you that my first whisky blog isn’t really about whisky at all but Something Else, but apparently blogs are meant to be spontaneous, so it makes sense to write about what I’m doing which, as it happens, is sitting by the shore of the Caribbean with a rum in one hand and a cigar in the other. I’ll put them down in order to write though. 

There’s a light breeze coming off the ocean, cooling the late afternoon air, my toes wriggle in the white sand and the heat of ginger beer is mixing perfectly with the rum in the glass. I’m chilling after an afternoon at the Caribbean’s newest, yet also somehow oldest, distillery. It’s at St.Nicholas Abbey, a Jacobean mansion built in the 1630s in the north of the island. Given it was.. and still is.. a sugar plantation it is inconceivable that rum wouldn’t have been made here in the 17th century.. making this one of the oldest sites of distillation in rum’s birthplace. 

There’s been no rum made here for many years.. until now.  A spanking little still has just been installed and once again estate-grown cane will be crushed and the juice fermented, distilled and then aged on the premises. It’s small, it’s boutique, it’s premium, it’s bringing the island’s heritage alive..

On the other side of the Atlantic at this precise moment, on another sand-garlanded island  Anthony Wills is unveiling Kilchoman’s first legal single malt. His vision is boutique, premium, estate-grown, bringing the island’s heritage alive. After all, some would argue that Scotland’s first distiller plied his art right here on the Islay’s west coast.

Coincidence? Not really. Around the world, distillers are approaching their spirits in a similar fashion: quality, individuality, heritage are the buzz-words. That there’s this psychic link between Islay and Barbados isn’t that strange: there is ever greater exchange of ideas between whisky and rum distillers, malt lovers are also increasingly rum lovers. Islay or Barbados? That’s not the question. Its both!
