横浜に恋をした。素敵な雰囲気がいい。どの建物からもジャズが流れてくるようだ。涼風が流れ開放的だ。中華街のパンダが目に焼きついている。そして何といってもバーだ。今夜の横浜探索はウィスキーマガジン秋号に掲載される予定だが、横浜のマイクは軍隊のように時間にきっちりとした行動計画を立てていた。海軍に所属する彼のことだから当然のことだ・・・なるほど、だから遅い時間になるに従い、正確な時間が少し狂ってきたのだ。 2軒目から3件目のバーへは12分かかるという彼の予想は的確だった。3軒目から4軒目へは15分との予想が、5分しかかからなかった。道順を練っていた時に、海兵隊員だから道の距離（長さ）と幅まで考慮したのだろう。
早いペースでバーを梯子したのは良かった。もっと飲む時間が出来たから。（いや、さらにバーを探究できたと言うべきだ）特に和牛バーガーを堪能し、世界中のバーを含めて私のお気に入りのスリーマーティーニで冷たいのを何杯かやれたのは良かった。
ここで記事の内容を全て暴露するつもりはないが、横浜から渋谷への最終電車でこれを書いている私の頭には様々なイメージが交差する。ここは何のビルか分らないようなありふれた建物の管理人の店だ。（とても村上春樹的だ）；素敵な帽子、今年の流行りの白黒の輪、新しいマガジンをつかまされている。（新しいマガジンについては話したよね？）これから未来のマガジンの購読者だ。この日本の友人たちにスコットランドの「ハーフアンドハーフ」、つまり小さいハーフ（例：ウィスキー）と大きいハーフ（ビールのパイント）と「とりあえずソーダ割り」について説明する。煙草の煙、素敵なジャズ、幻覚的なフルーツカクテル。スリーマーティーを去る頃には、日本版アマチュアバンドのエディー藩やファズボックスに愛着を感じながら別れを告げる。

You know, I’m really falling in love with Yokohama. I like its chilled atmosphere, the way that jazz seems to ooze from every building, its cool breezes and openness, its strange obsession with pandas and most of all its bars. Now, the full report of our evening’s peregrinations will appear in WM-J Autumn issue but let it be noted that Yokohama Mike had planned it with military precision which isn’t that much of a surprise as he was in the Navy.. actually that might explain why his timings began to slip a little towards the end of the evening. While his estimation that it would take 12 minutes to walk from the second to the third bar to another was spot on, his belief that it would be 15 minutes from No3 to No4 was way out.. it took five. Maybe when he’d worked out the route his sailor’s gait had taken him across the width of the road as well as the length of it.
This speedier progression between hostelries had a definite upside as it allowed for more drinking time (sorry, in-depth research) which suits me, especially as it gave us the opportunity for a wagyu burger and a couple of cold ones at one of my favourite bars in the world, Three Martinis
I’m not going to give the game away but writing this on the last train from Yokohama to Shibuya the mind is full of a buzzing array of images: drinking in what I took from the outside to be a janitor’s cupboard in an anonymous building whose function no-one quite seemed able to explain (very Haruki Murakami); great hats, the black and white hoops that seem to be this year’s fashion, foisting copies of the new mag (have I mentioned the new mag?) on potential new subscribers, teaching Japanese friends the Scottish concept of the ‘hauf and a hauf’ which is a wee hauf (ie a whisky) and a big hauf (a pint of beer) and the creation of the ‘tori aizu sodawari’; cigarette smoke, the ever present jazz, hallucinatory fruit cocktails and.. just as we were leaving Three Martinis .. a discovery of a shared love of Japanese garage bands, Eddie Ban and your fuzz box, we salute you.
