夜の集いがあった翌朝は、北西から強く新鮮な風が吹きこんでいる。これは（少なくてもこのクルーズで）未知の地へ向かう我々にとっては絶好の風だ。目指すはアウターヘブリディーズ諸島だ。西へ向かう、こうやって太陽を追いかけるということで、なんとも大きな満足感が生まれてくる。船長が、波の上の低い位置にある汚れた青色の先端を指さす。「Eriskay島だ」「まっすぐあれに向かって進め」と言う。我々との間にさえぎるものは何もない。私だってこれなら到達できる。
Eriskayには蒸留所がないかもしれない（合法的な蒸留所という意味だが）が、しかし、ウィスキーについて語られる時、登場する場所なのだ。座礁したSSポリティシャン号が乗り上げた岩が今も竜骨の下にある。第二次世界大戦の時代にウィスキーを積載したこの難破船は、住民たちにとっては予期せぬ恵みをもたらしたのである。
SS ポリティッシャンが沈むと、積荷のウィスキーは海岸へ流れ着いた。「ウィスキーガロアー」という映画まで製作された。そして暫くの間、ここは世界で最も幸福に満ちた島となった。
ウィスキー造りについては、明暗入り混じった歴史がある。Pabbay島から南西の島あたりの大麦を原料にシングルモルトを生み出していた時代は遥か昔のことだ。島の人々もそうだ。ここでは不法の蒸留が行われていた。ただこれは変わりつつある。
Lewis島のレッドリバーには蒸留所がある。バラ島の住民と話していた時、島の蒸留所については計画中という話も聞こえてきた。さらに9月にはウィスキーガロアフェスティバルも開催される予定である。キャッスル湾にへブリディーンの太陽が沈んでいく。西の島でのウィスキー造りの一ページを飾るべくまた陽が昇る。

On the morning after the ceilidh the wind has freshened and is blowing hard from the north-west which is the perfect direction to take us to terra incognita (for the Cruise at least) ... the Outer Hebrides.There is something immensely satisfying about heading west, chasing the sun. The Skipper points at a low dusty blue peak rising above the waves. “That’s Eriskay,” he says, “head straight for it.” Given there is nothing between us and it, even I can manage that.
Eriskay may not have a distillery (well, a legal one) but is an island which has its part in whisky’s story. The rocks which are now under the keel are the same which crippled the SS Politician, the whisky-laden ship whose wrecking during the second world war gave an unexpected liquid bounty to the islanders. When ‘The Polly’ went down and cases of whisky began to be washed up on the beach they sailed out and cleared the holds of all its contents. They even made a film ‘Whisky Galore’ about it. For a time this was the happiest island in the world.
Whisky-making however has had a more chequered history here. The days when the barley on the island of Pabbay, to the southwest, was turned into single malt have long gone, as have all that island’s people. Any distilling that took place was illicit. These days are changing however.
The island of Lewis now has a distillery at Red River and, chatting to the locals in Barra, we discover that the plans for that island’s distillery are underway... and that there’s even a Whisky Galore festival taking place there in September. As the Hebridean sun goes down on Castlebay, so it rises on the start of a new chapter for whisky-making in the Utter West.
