収穫祭 HARVEST FESTIVAL
まず暫くのご無沙汰をお詫びする。今回は秋のウイスキーの収穫ということでご紹介しよう。まず最初に訪れたのはディアジオが毎年開催する「スペシャルリリース」のテイスティングである。いつもと同じように社内のバー（まあいいだろう）で、卸業者、ライターや取り巻きなど多くの人々が詰めかけた。9種類の限定版ドラムやカナッペが提供された。立って、書いて食べるというのはなかなか難しかったが。
ブローラ、ラガブーリン、タリスカーは凄かった。ウイスキーが素晴らしいということはさることながら、今年は知名度の低いドラムが目を引いた。
ピティヴェアック(20年)をテイスティングした時、私は「セックスピストルズ」や「プレティーヴェイカント」をハミングし始めていた。 イメージし得るパンクウイスキーとは全く違う。今年のリリースはグリーンの葡萄、キンカンが満載。泡のようで軽いがしっかりとした個性を持っている。カイリー・ミノーグ だろうか？ 今年のピートの焚いていないカリラ （10年）は同じように軽くはじけている。メロンやフレッシュなフルーツサラダのようだ。大きな驚きは23年のベンリネス。大ファンなのだが、これはかなりミーティーで、イチジク、シェリーの影響をかなり受けたウイスキーであるが蒸溜所の特徴も持っている。最高点だ。
残りのタリスカー30年はバルサミコやオイスターの香りがあり洗練されている。 25年はさらにスモーキーで月桂樹、アブサン系のハーブが爆発している（ヨモギ、コリアンダー）。ラガブーリン12年は優雅で野蛮。ポートエレン（9回目のリリース）はこのところ出されたものでは最高で、骨組みだけの簡素さが少なくなっている。モルトを台無しにしかねない。ブローラはひどい酪酸の薬は消え、漁師が塗装されたばかりのトロール船で甘草を食べているようだ。
あとざっと3つを紹介しよう。レイモンド・アームストロングの最初のリリース、ブラッドノックで蒸溜された (8年、 43%)もので、ディアジオが放棄した時に蒸溜所を助けた頃のものが感じられる。 フローラル、ジューシー、バター、スパイスのかかったアップルジュースフィニッシュ。
お薦め。
新しいグレンゴイン 12年は甘く、濡れたツイードがココナッツのヘアオイル（田舎の紳士)とバランスがとれている。赤りんごやナッツとレモンが互いに絡み合う。これは大丈夫だ。最近リリースされた40年のランシォの香り、テレビン油、乾燥したマッシュルーム、熟成した中国のライスワイン、白檀、入り江、ローストしたパイナップルとは違う。味わいは、個人的にはレモンの皮、少しナッツが感じられるが、消えていく。悪くない、万人のためのウイスキー。
It’s been a while my little chums for which I apologise, so let’s get this show back on the road with a basket filled with some of this autumn’s whisky harvest. My first port of call was Diageo’s annual ‘Special Releases’ tasting. This, as usual, was held in its in-house bar (all right for some) and featured among a jostling crowd of merchants, writers and attendant hangers-on, a clutch of managers and nine limited edition drams..oh and some canapes, though it’s diffficult to eat, write and taste while standing.
Not that this mattered for the whiskies were excellent. The big hitters [Brora, Lagavulin, Talisker] were out in force, but it was some lesser-known drams which caught the eye this year.
I always start humming the Sex Pistols’ ‘Pretty Vacant’ when I taste Pittyvaich (20yo), which couldn’t be further from the truth as it’s as far from a punk whisky as you can imagine. This year’s release was alll green grapes and kumquat.. all very frothy and light, but with real character.. Kylie Minogue perhaps? This year’s unpeated Caol Ila (10yo) was in similar pop vein, all melons and fresh fruit salad. The big surprise was a 23yo Benrinnes.. I’m a huge fan of the Ben and this is it in magnificently meaty, figgy form .. a heavily-sherried whisky which still has distillery character. My top score.
As for the rest.. Taliser 30yo is sophisticated with balsamic and oyster notes, the 25yo is smokier with laurel and an explosion of absinthe-style herbs (wormwood, coriander). Lagavulin 12 is elegantly brutal. Port Ellen (9th release) is one of the best of recent years with less of the skeletal austerity that can bedevil this malt while the Brora has recovered from its horrible butyric patch and is like a fisherman eating liquorice on a freshly painted trawler.
Three more quickies. Look out for the first release of Raymond Armstrong-distilled Bladnoch [8yo, 43%] which simply picks up where the distillery was left when Diageo abandoned it.. floral, juicy and buttery with an spiced apple juice finish. Recommened.
A new Glengoyne 12yo is sweet, with wet tweed balanced by coconut hair oil (quite the country gent), russet apple and a nutty/lemony interplay. I can afford this, unlike the recently released 40yo whose nose is filled with rancio notes: turps, dried mushroom, aged Chinese rice wine, sandalwood, bay, roast pineapple. The palate, for me, shows its age zesty s;ightly nutty but it’s fading.
Not a bad haul and a whisky there for everyone.
